With colours, you can set the defaults to whatever you want. Just use a preset. Then you can select the preset(s) at import. Also if you use DNG you can change profile from Adobe to Embedded. And if you have a colorchecker from x-rite, they provide software for generating your own profiles. Which I use when taking photos with 10ND filter. I also shot it for all the lenses etc.

it's easy to change the default colours in LR to whatever suits you tastes.

We use Aperture all the time, and your Aperture version is bleached out. If you'd read the manual on Aperture, the first thing you do is adjust the boost. For some strange reason, Aperture turns the boost all the way up by default when you import. I haven't found a way to change that. So, best practice is to adjust the boost before you do anything else. I find we usually end up with boost at about 20%.

Just looking at your photo's, that would be my first suggestion.. the boost is not affected by any of the presets..

A good source of info would be Apple Aperture 3 - A Workflow Guide for Digital Photographers

Sometimes I think Apple does stuff like the boost thing, just so they have something great to teach you when you finally shell out the big bucks to take one of their courses. But hey, maybe Apple engineers have some other reason for having most of your photographs looking fried when you first import, and I'm just not smart enough to figure out what it is.

The whole trick to a one minute process with APerture is creating your own presets for different shooting issues, and knowing how to apply them effectively.

Since this is the Film Processing, Scanning and Darkroom thread, I'll say Aperture does not read a partial implementations of the DNG spec file. That is, if you scan your film to a DNG file (which some scanning software does), Lightroom will open and edit it with more features than a TIFF file. Aperture currently does not.

You said you only spent 2 mins on each. I'd be really interested to know on each package what you did in that 2 mins because that could easily make a difference.

You can use this service to upload the RAW file https://www.dropbox.com/

I wouldn't mind having a go at it over weekend.

Google Drive, if you have a gmail account (who doesn't), and share the link. Google drive is also clever enough to recognise .PEF file as an image file and show the embedded JPEG preview.

I decided not to spend too much time on it and to make the photo darker than your ones, also our colour temp is different. I've spent most of the time on dodging the windows than removing the unwanted artifacts with automask (hold option key). Took me about 2 minutes, so it's not that great of a job. But it allowed me to change the temp, make it darker and saturate the colour a bit more. It's in LR4. I probably went overboard with saturation, but all I wanted to do was dodge the windows, since I thought they left the images slightly flat....

The last one is a bit too HDRish for my liking. This is what Silkypix with my usual settings makes of it, followed by PTLens to take out the distortions only. Perhaps just a touch too warm in colour. Also the yellow runway centre line seems to have gone

Thanks for the examples. To my eyes LR4 is still "winning".

I asked for his procedure for both programs before but we haven't seen it yet. He said a 2 mins PP time. Without it it's difficult to say whether it is the program or the user that is making the difference.

I guess you mean me then? I used the same procedure on LR4 as I did on AP3.2 & AP3.2.

Auto exposure adjustment
Adjusted global shadows up
Adjusted global highlights way down (also about 1.3 setting no recovery slider in AP)
Subtle clarity increase in LR, 0.13 setting for "definition" in AP
Enable CA correction in LR to remove PF, desaturated purple in color brick in AP to remove PF
Enable lens correction in LR, exported to PTLens from AP for lens correction
Slight edge sharpening in both

No local brush adjustments in either package.

From memory that was it, I don't think I played with contrast or saturation or vibrance.

Here are a couple of Pentax DCU4 attempts. Very quick to do, dropped the sensitivity to recover the highlights, Dodge control to 100%, Hi-Lo Key pushed to max, Shadow Compensation High, Auto corrections for distortion and CA. WB was changed on the brighter photo. The only way I could see to maintain detail in the windows was to darken the cabin.

I find it difficult to process a photo without having been there to see the actual colours. DCU4 was able to save the photo, but does not have the flexibility of more sophisticated programs.

I prefer the slightly brighter manual WB version:

Double size (1600 pixels) available here: https://picasaweb.google.com/bonhommed/NotMyPhotos?authkey=Gv1sRgCPHkup3bhpL...83978788079426
I can't find a way to link anything larger than 800 pixels wide from my Picasa page.
