HDR process

For those who have done HDR post processing...

Do you intentionally shoot with HDR in mind
How many shots do you take
Do you change the aperture opening or the speed

Thanks

it's something you have to plan to do properly. set the camera to auto bracket 2 ev steps at a time (5 is ideal with a k10d). the aperture has to stay the same, and the camera shouldn't move; if it does the merged hdr file will have ghost lines depending on how much it's moved and if the software can correct it.

take your raws and merge to hdr. tone map and you're done. an hdr file isn't something you can easily look at, each pixel is 32bit of color. the tone mapping is what creates the final image.

I do plan for HDR. Mostly when I have an early morning shoot and maybe a silhouette object in the foreground and know to catch both the rising sun and the darker forground object. I usually try to get a correct exposure for most of the objects and then set the camera with +/- 2 EV with 3 exposures. Do need a tripod for best results. Seems to work.

On Photomatrix pro when I merge them I keep the settings for relatively modest or conservative but do try some of the different settings. I don't like when the picture looks too artifical.

- Yes, my HDR shots are intentional
- As many as I feel I need to, when I first started, I didn't feel comfortable with just a few shots. One of my early compositions was 17 different exposures.
- Change shutter speed only as I do NOT want to have varying depth of fields (they won't merge well in such cases). I also shoot in manual focus.

Like the rest I shot 5 intentional shots with HDR in mind. Adjusting shutter speeds only. Most of the time I do it myself instead of using the bracket feature but that's only from habit and shooting film.

I use HDR technique for shooting interiors, and always use tripod. I don't rely on +-2ev from my camera. I measure with spot metering on brightest and darkest (but still visible) points in frame, usually take 3 shots.
In Photomatix Pro, strength on about 80%, saturation on about 27%, then to CS2.
Always on iso 100 !
