yes, I thought about that, too. we actually have a small netbook, but our hand luggage is getting cramped already with 2 Ipads and diapers in every available free space... they work pretty well as extra padding in my photobag, though

Of course, but compact & light has it's place sometimes too, and this is as compact as it comes.

Might be a silly question but why not flash drives instead of external hard drives? I usually travel with a laptop (netbook someday soon) and use usb flash drives to backup. They are small light weight and easily storable anywhere. I even accidently washed one once (in a coat pocket), the files were intact and I'm still using the drive today!

Mainly because they don't hold enough. A 100GB flash drive costs a few hundred I think, while a more conventional drive you can get 500GB for less than $100...
