Digital preview: The camera shows, on the LCD screen, the image you have just produced (it is not written to your SD card). Some regard this as useless.
Optical preview: The camera actuates the diaphragm opening to your determined value (say, F/8) and you see its effect on the viewfinder. This is the same DOF preview present in many pre-digital SLR cameras. Only certain lenses can be used this way since there must be a two way communication between the camera and the lens.

BC has that right and as for the counter, Pentax browser shows the total, including the test fires at the factory. The counter then resets to IMGP0000 when 9,999 images/actuations have been reached.

Will the Pentax browser show" ex number of factory-shot images plus the number of images I've shot? As opposed to the number shown on the file name. The Pentax browser IMGPxxxx number is both combined. I don't know of any way to see them separated nor a way to see the grand total if the shutter has been actuated (tests/previews/shots) more than 10,000 times. Once it rolls over to 0000, the counter is reset.
