Here's another MS gem with Win8.

How do you create Recovery Discs for your new Windows 8 computer? Well, you go to the Charm (read as Ribbon in realspeak) and do a search for, are you ready for this, Windows 7 (Yes, it’s Windows 7) File Recovery.

They didn't even rename the subroutine. Wow, can they be any lazier at MS?

I like the idea behind Win8 (better said the idea of the start screen), but this version needs ... ummm ... there is a lot to "iron out".
And I bet a software designer was not involved properly in development ... too many flaws I personally would of not approved as a designer.

I'd personally give it some time to grow ... and then make the switch.

As for the "Start" button, there is still one as far as I remember, you just have to activate it: How to get the Start menu back in Windows 8 | Windows 8 - CNET Reviews

Why do you guys think the brain (Steven Sinofsky) behind Win8 is now gone? That says a lot.

Thanks for the link. Just to be clear, MicroSx's does NOT allow a Start Button to be activated in any way in Win8, those are all 3rd party applications that must be downloaded and laid on top of Win8 to simulate the usability of Win7. It's nice that they exist but it tells me a LOT that there are like scores of them already and Win8 has been out 3 weeks! Whoever headed this project up needs to just go away, seriously find another line of work.

One of the users left a great comment there and I quote "Microsoft will make something which doesn't Suck. It will be a vacuum cleaner."

Waiting for Android to mature into desktop and laptop. Windows are too greedy and power hogging.

Those of us who follow the tech sites have known about what was coming with Windows 8 for months. Microsoft NEEDS a solid tablet OS to survive in the future. That is something we can all agree on. Windows 8 seems to be forcing the tablet experience on desktop users and that is totally unnecessary. My interest is very high in the Windows Pro Tablet due out in January. The thought of having Photoshop and Lightroom on a high resolution tablet should be intriguing to any photographer. That said, I am planning to keep running Windows 7 on my desktop for a good while yet. The desktop computer isn't going anywhere. I like my large monitor and large hard drives and all my stuff accessible. From what I have seen of Windows 8, I will skip it on my desktop as I skipped Vista. Windows 7 is a pretty good platform and I think Microsoft is making a big mistake. Where I work, there are hundreds of computers still running Windows XP and I work for a large food distributor with warehouses nationwide. That equals thousands of computers and there are thousands of compainies worldwide still running XP. Are they going to switch to Windows 8? No way! Microsoft needs to wake up and build a good tablet platform AND a good desktop instead of a mediocre OS that isn't great with either.

I am assisting some developers who are moving one of my old XP applications to Win7. I no longer use Win, converted to Linux years ago.
They were unable to port the application to Win8 as it needs apps to be on the its VB.net platform, so they reverted to Win7.
Today they are telling me that there is an now update in Win7 that no longer allows exes in the traditional "C:\Program Files" to be run by anybody except administrator.
Is that right? Sounds silly. Does anybody on here know?

It isn't the execution but copying, modifying and deleting files in C:\Program Files is forbidden, even if you are administrator, except during installation.
The same limitation comes with Win7 64 bits if the user isn't administrator...
You have now a hidden directory C:\ProgramData for all the config, temp, etc files...

But the truth is Win8 is like Vista. I hope Win8.1 or Win9 will be like Win7... with a start button

That explains it, as the exes in there write to files in their environment.
I will pass this info on to my colleagues in India who are a little anxious right now.
Thanks very much for the timely reply.

With every update of the Mac OS, there is inevitably some griping, but mostly, the reactions are strongly positive. With Windows, it seems to be the opposite. I really don't care if Windows users switch to Mac, but I do wonder why they are willing to put up with the aggravation. Other than needing to use programs that are Windows only, I cannot understand the persistent loyalty to a system that is so often a total mess. Yes, Macs are more expensive, but they last far longer. I am currently using a 6 1/2 year old MacPro that is running like a clock with OS 10.7.5. In contrast, my sons use Windows machines that they feel compelled to update approximately every 3 years, despite which they still have operational issues that seem insoluble.

I have no desire to start a flame war. Windows users, carry on.
