My current machine is (as I type this) ....

Motherboard - Asus M4A78 Pro
CPU - Athlon II X4 620
4 Gig RAM of DDR2
Graphics Card - GeForce GTX 285 with 2gig RAM

It gets the job done, but is OLD by today's standards.

That's a great rig already; wish I had such a gfx card like that before.. But anyway, if LR starts within 5
seconds, that's good enough for me

Actually nothing on the PC itself yet... waiting for the new release of motherboards and GFX cards to get a good bargain on the midrange ones going out
So far I've scoured some hard drives for future use. 16MP RAWs are bigger than I thought (and so is 1080p video)

Sounds good. Maybe I should wait too. I'm also planning on building a new rig cause mine's just not working out. What processor you planning to get?

+1 on this. I usually use Gigabyte Mobo's

one important thing is to never skimp on the RAM - stitching panoramas, HDR and using layers in photographs eats up RAM - the more you have the smoother things will go for you, I exclusively use Corsir ram.

The videocard doesn't matter all that much - but depending on your monitor having HDMI and Displayport is essential - many monitors designed for photography these days are offering displayport connectivity and the reason for this is that is because the increase in channel bits.

Another thing is you may wish to have an external data back up system - I personally use a DROBO with Ethernet connectivity for secure backup.
