Silkypix vs. Lightroom 4 ?

I recently bought a K30 and it came with a Pentax branded version of Silkypics.
I am new to photo editing and find Silkypics far from intuitive.
Are there many people using Silkypics?

Should I skip trying to figure out Silkypics and buy LR4?

I am assuming LR4 is the most popular software currently.

There will be a learning curve with both, but LR4 will (IMO) certainly be better.

+1, LR4 can do so much in terms of cataloguing your images as well editing them.

P.S. Remember your need to have a 64 bit platform/operating system for LR4 to run.

There is still a 32bit version of LR4, but you need Windows Vista or later (no XP support).

Silkypix was one of the main go to RAW developers when I got my K10D (version 3 was just out around then) but Lightroom has certainly become the standard now. Personally I would go LightRoom.

I guess there is a trial version of LR so you can see if you find it more intuitive or not.

But I think LR is more powerful and has a lot bigger user base (which means more forums, tutorials, presets, etc...)

LR4 is probably the way to go especially since the K-30 creates RAW files in DNG instead of the old PEF format. As someone has already mentioned, there is a large selection of LR4 books, videos and presets available. I have purchased several sets of presets and it's a great way to start to learn what LR can do.

I don't have the latest Lightroom, but I think Silkypix is much more complicated to use. There is a reason why Lightroom is so popular (even though it has shortcomings)

That's why there's CS6.

Between the two, LR 4 and CS6 there ain't much I can't do, well I've not found anything yet.

P.S. Apart from, making me take better images in the first place.

Thanks for all the great advice.
Looks like I will have to get LR4 on trial and see how it goes.

After I upgraded my computer I fully intended to buy LR4 but I got a free copy of Adobe Elements with my new scanner and Elements can process RAW dng files. It seems so much easier to use than silkypix ever was.

I may still buy LR, but for now I am just going to continue to use Elements until it doesn't do something I want to do.

Thanks for the reminder. I forgot I have a copy of Elements 8 that came with one of my cameras or scanner.

Is anyone familiar with real world improvements between PSE 8 and PSE11 or LR4?
Is PSE8 outdated by todays standards?
I did check out the comparison chart as far as features but the chart does not take ease of use or quality of results.

I might consider the $79.95 upgrade price for PSE11 if it is hugely improved.

Silkypix 3 - it that's what comes bundled with the K-30 - is a relic best forgotten. The current version is Silkypix Developer Studio Pro 5 which is actually usable.
