DNG is Adobe's universal RAW format. Going forward it will be the only RAW format supported by Pentax.

And if you have a bunch of .pef files lying around you should be able to convert them to .dng using Adobe camera raw / dng converter...

I've never heard a good reason to use .pef...

The K20D didn't compress DNG files but did compress PEF files so DNG files were much bigger. The K-7 introduced lossless compression for DNG.

As others have suggested, DNG is probably the better choice in any event. I also recommend using it exclusively.

That said, you probably want to upgrade to a newer version of PSE. The newest, PSE11, will recognize many formats that the older versions do not (example - the ARW raw files produced by my NEX-5R were unrecognized by PSE 10 but work fine in PSE 11. Adobe has been accused of failing to provide backward compatibility for just this reason, to force users to upgrade. Regardless, the improved and added features of 11 versus 7 make it definitely worth the $60.00 or so to upgrade. Content Aware Healing and Fill alone were worth that to me.

well, i was going to upgrade to lr4 with the new camera but realized i'd have to upgrade my computer too. so, thought about upgrading to pse 10 or 11 but i don't know if it is compatable with silver efex pro (not pro 2). in the end i decided to stick with what i have until the computer dies then i'll upgrade.

You can convert PEF to DNG using Pentax Digital Camera Software.

from the help file:

(1) Select the image to convert to a DNG RAW file in File List Page.
(2) Select [Save as DNG] from the [Tools] menu.
