MetaRaw from The Plugin Site

In general I am happy with my version of Photoshop CS5. If I were to get a Pentax K-5II, I would normally also have to upgrade photoshop in order for me to read raw files. It would have been nice if camera raw could be upgraded separately from photoshop itself, since photoshop is a bit pricey. I would be happy to pay for upgrades to the camera raw, so that I can read raw files of newer cameras. No, the Plugin Site just released this plugin that imports many raw files in photoshop. I wonder how well it works. Perhaps I will give it a try the next days. In general I like their products, so it is likely that I will like this product too.

Any thoughts? Opinions?

Shoot DNG instead of PEF or am I missing something?

Worth a try, but sometimes RAW processors like to apply customisations to how they process the RAW based on the specs of the camera. Hence the constant addition of body updates to LR, DxO etc even for cameras that can natively shoot DNG.

So CS5 may be able to open K-5II DNG's, but it may not know how to process them optimally.

A way around this may be to download the latest Adobe DNG Converter, then convert K-5II PEF's to fresh DNG's, then open them in CS5. The DNG Converter gets updated everytime Adobe Camera Raw is updated, so it knows about all the optimisations and technical capabilities of the newest camera bodies....

I only use Lightroom so my experience is limited. But I think this is handled in LR under camera calibration. You can use the embedded profile, the Adobe profile or create your own. As I understand it these profiles are used to cook the jpeg from the DNG. SO a slightly different DNG could be accommodated by a new profile.

The DNG converter option is also a good one though it adds another step in the workflow. LR will also convert to DNG on import and I assume uses the same ACR as the converter. Assuming you have the latest version of course.

Sounds like a violation of the DNG standard if true...

From Wikipedia:
"Self-contained file format: a DNG file contains the data (raw image data and metadata) needed to render an image without needing additional knowledge of the characteristics of the camera."

Tell that to the developers of RAW processors like Capture One, DxO Optics Pro, Silkypix/Pentax DCU, and even Adobe.

Capture One in particular used to mangle my K-x DNG's until their support team came to the party, and K-30 users have had a LOT of recent trouble trying to get C1 to render their DNG's properly.

DNG doesn't seem 'self-contained' as it is made out to be, unfortunately. You may be able to see something in there out-of-the-box, but it may not be an optimal rendering.

Indeed - but the question still remains is it a fault of the basic implementation of the DNG standard or the fault of software trying to go beyond DNG specifications?

My own experience using ACR ver 8.1.0.43 + PS CS6 is that the rendering is spot on right out of the box (a K5).

Just for the hell of it I tried importing a DNG file directly into esri ArcGIS an advanced Cartographic Production program that knows nothing about photography and it imported it perfectly. But Capture One can't? - weird.

I don't doubt what you are saying but I have to wonder where the fault is.

Probably the latter. Or just lazy coders. But it is certainly re-assuring to know that DNG does work as designed in some instances.

But - are you sure you weren't just seeing the JPG preview embedded in the DNG, rather than a rendering of the DNG per se?

My story with K-x DNG's and C1 Express (v5 I think, in those days) is illustrated below (RAW+ is a handy way to shoot):
JPG:

DNG as rendered by C1 Express:

As mentioned, much of the image is there, but clearly there can sometimes be a mis-match between the DNG as processed and displayed and how it should look.

Phase One did address this though in C1, so it can be made to work, but you can't always assume it will.

Clearly something is broken. I have never had such color distortion with my software. It looks like a damn cartoon.

Here's what I'm getting with my setup. My cat looking out a north facing window. Difficult subtle light and without any special PP. Tone, WB, color etc is pretty realistic and close to what the naked eye would see. ACR is only working on DNG data for sure.

But how does it look when esri ArcGIS shows the same DNG? That's the test.

I can also get similarly great results (minus the cat ) out of K-200/K-x/K-5 DNG's from Lightroom, DxO, C1 (now) etc, but they are all versions that know about the 'personality' of each camera sensor and have been tuned correspondingly, just like ACR v8 has. I mean, you can see the ACR camera support timeline here:

http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

K-5 DNG/PEF support only came along in ACR v6.3 - I don't think earlier versions would even open a K-5 DNG, let alone render the DNG perfectly. Hence the OP's post.

The two are different but not enough for me to lose sleep over.
Note:used Perfect Resize 7 instead of PS for reasons too complicated to explain.

That's certainly a good result. If your GIS app isn't acting as a PS plugin, and/or using ACR to render the RAW, I guess they are probably relying on dcraw or a similar RAW processor to render the DNG into a JPEG. dcraw is usually kept pretty up to date with the newest camera bodies (although support for K-30 and K-01 still isn't there in dcraw, it seems).

I have done that a while back when I got a K-7. I am trying to remember the problem, but I think some of the exif data is not included in the DNG files or something... Anyway I ended up upgrading Photoshop...

The whole work around using DNG files seems cumbersome...

I'll give Metaraw a try in a couple of days. I wonder about the rendering, and how it differs from ACR...

That seems odd, all info is available in k-5 files, maybe it is a k-7 thing. On newer cameras Pentax no longer uses PEF but DNG as the native RAW format.

Here's a dump of all the DNR tags from the cat shot I have been posting - it's a lot more than I thought...
Just thought some might find it interesting to see just how much is included besides the RAW sensor data.
