Ligthroom plugin PhotoFX

This may be a simple question but since I don't have LR so I need someone to confirm my conjectures.

I have a pef file so it cannot be opened by PhotoFX. I use LR to open the pef file and then use the plugin function to call Topaz PhotoFX. Then, the PhotoFX will launch and have the image data from the pef file. I guess what it does in between is generate a TIF or PNG file to pass the image data from one software to another. (If someone can explain this, I would like to learn too).

Now my question is if I need to do more LR editing after the PhotoFX editing, should I save the file in TIF format and then go back to LR and open the TIF file? Or there is a better way to do it. Similar question is if I do some LR editing before calling the plugin software, will LR pass the original image file to the plugin software or the one after LR editing?

I hope you understand my question as I am new to all of these software. So far, I only use Faststone to do my processing.

I can't say for sure, but I suspect that it provides a reference to the bit-mapped image in memory rather than creating a temporary file.

this is how it works:

Tweak the photo in LR
Then open it in FXlab through LR (LR will automatically make a tiff file with LR adjustments you already made)
make any adjustments necessary in FXlab, when ready press ok and all adjustments will be saved in the tiff file.
The tiff file will be in the LR catalogue, so can be adjusted in LR right after saving with FXlab
now you can make more adjustments on that file in LR.

Thanks,

I guess the TIFF is pretty big. Does the computer take a long time to hand over from LR to FXlab?
