Its a fairly new sharpening formula. Raw Therapee has it.

Lightroom has had it since version 3, which is a contributor to why I've never needed any external sharpening plugin.

RL deconvolution = Richardson–Lucy deconvolution

It's most effective for motion blur.

I'm pretty sure Focus Magic uses it.

Where is deconvolution sharpening hiding in LR? I don't recall seeing the option anywhere.

"Hiding" is very much the proper description. Decon kicks in with the Details slider around the 50 value, so halos are suppressed. As you know, LR sharpening is very complex, indeed, mysterious, especially around the known effects of the Details slider. If I recall correctly, there is a funny paragraph in Schewe and Fraser's book about how even ACR's engineers don't fully have a handle on it.

Addendum: Rumor has it that Details 0-50 = USM; 50-100 ramps up Decon and tapers off USM.

Aha. Thanks for the tip. I'd forgotten about that little slider. I barely ever touch it.

Now that you mention it, falconeye in these forums did describe long ago how the Details slider was implementing deconvolution. I must remember to use it more often.

The phrase you learn something new everyday, well I gonna make this mine for today, it's rumour that sounds very plausible to me.

That is until I'm told otherwise, then I'll unlearn this.
