PC for pp

I'm only planning on shooting In JPEG for now and am planning on using something like fastone or gimp, possibly pse to do some basic editing.
Can I get away with using something like a core i3 6 gb 2.4 ghz 17" screen 1600x900 res? Do I even need something that fast? Can I get away with a celeron and 4 gigs of ram?
My wife is starting school in a month and I'm not able to drop $1000 on something right now. And I don't want to spend 600-700 on something that is going to be too slow as well.

So I just want a basic laptop that I can store my pics on and use a basic program to do basic editing with. I use my wife's computer that has a very very basic editor on it and the pics come out close to good enough. I know the colors won't be great on a cheap screen but gotta use what I can afford. Thanks for any replies.

Get the I3 over the Celeron, newer tech plus has Hyperthreading.
Unless your OS is 64 bit no need for 6gb of ram. The machine will only use 3.5 gb tops.
You might save a bit if you look at the AMD processors.
Get at least a 500 gb hard drive also.

Thanks for the reply. So why does everything I read say to get minimum 8 gigs of ram, preferably 12,for photo editing? I'm assuming that's for large RAW files. Why get more than that if the computer will only use 3.5?

Use a 64-bit operating system and application and it will use more than 3.5GB.

I bought my wife a HP laptop at Staples a couple of years ago. It's running an AMD processor, has a WD 500GB hard drive, and 4 GB of Samsung memory with room to add another 4GB. (I opened it up. Couldn't help myself) It cost $299 on sale. It will run Lightroom 4 although it's much slower than my desktop. Adding more memory is a 5 minute job if you need it.
