Photoshop on Chromebook... Education only!

Google Chrome Blog: Adobe joins the Chromebook party, starting with Photoshop

I don't know how I missed this for a month but the one thing that I complained about to Adobe - they fixed - sort of. The program is only open to Education users and is in Beta. Hopefully this transitions to general availability soon.

In case anyone is eligible and wants to join the beta:

Sadly since I'm not an educator or a student I'm not able to join...

Google bought Picnik then closed it down. They bought Nik, which had Snapseed, and ended desktop development. Either one of these was a better fit for ChromeOS than Photoshop.

What makes you say that? Since this runs in a model that is essentially a thin client, the processing power of the hardware isn't really a major hurdle. The back end system that the photoshop instance runs on is more important.

Even worse. A subscription system. Most of what you would want to do to a photo using a Chromebook doesn't need Photoshop. For anything else, get a real laptop, preferably one with an IPS display...few and far between, and costly.

I can easily use an IPS display via my HDMI output on my Chromebook. And Adobe is basically set on converting everyone to subscription already - this isn't any different so far than Creative Cloud for Photographers. A "real" laptop with IPS onboard is very expensive and probably not worth it. Having a reasonable laptop with HDMI and an external HDMI connected IPS screen of significant size seems more rational. But for me the draw of a zero maintenance OS and a simple interface with zero cost productivity apps is pretty strong. I'd like to see this option work - before I decide it is junk.
