Hi all,

I'd like to preview my raw files in Windows before I move files to my photo library prior to importing them into LIghtroom. I've tried them all from Windows update and I continue to get the following messages from Windows Standalone Installer: "The update is not applicable to your computer." These indlude:

• Windows8.1-KB2859675-x64
• Windows8.1-KB2899189-x64
• Windows8-RT-KB2859541-x86

For the second in the list, "Windows8.1-KB2899189-x64" I get the message: "KB2899189_Microsoft-windows-cameracodec-Pac...is already installed on this computer" But when I try to view the files, I get "File format cannot be opened."



Any help?

I believe installing FastPictureViewer will fix this. Or you could install just the Codec Pack: FastPictureViewer Codec Pack: PSD, CR2, NEF, DNG RAW codecs (and more) for Windows 8.x Desktop, Windows 7, Windows Vista and XP

I have installed RAW codec on my PC with windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit without any error messages and works flawless. I downloaded it from Microsoft web site. While I am away from home I can tell you exactly what I installed first when I am back home, speak on Sunday.

If you have a K5 or older the Pentax Codec or the current Windows Codec pack from Microsoft with work with your PEF files. If you have a K3 or newer PEF codecs are not supplied by Pentax or Microsoft. If you use DNG as your raw file format the current Adobe DNG codec will work fine.

If you have raw PEF's your can covert them to DNG using Adobe's convertor.

Otherwise you'll end up buying a codec for your PEF.

You can use IrfanView to open RAW files. Sometimes I use it for some minor touch-ups since it has some useful filters and can even load adobe filters

I just recently ran across this thread and decided to downlaod the Adobe codec and try it, all i have to say is THANKS!!!!!!!this download works awesome, it is great to finally be able to browse through all my backed up images in DNG, it is even better to be able to click on any image and it will just open right up on apps like Picture Viewer, or photo gallery......this download just made my life a whole lot easier!
