The worst banding I've ever seen

I'm editing images from a recent hiking trip. I've taken some images for pnoramic purposes, and this is the result of one such attempt 4 or 5 steps into the workflow.

I'm still trying to confirm what the heck caused this, although I'm pretty sure I already know.

Skies will definitely band in 8-bits -- especially when "pushed" to be more contrasty or HDR-like.

Let me guess...Is Faststone part of your flow?

The workflow here was 8 or so DNGs into Microsoft ICE, exporting a panorama at JPEG compression 90, and then editing that in Paint.NET. I'll try exporting the raw files with edits from PDN first, then stitching. And different settings - this was pushed way more than I'd usually do.

Let me guess, looked good in ICE then ...

Exporting as JPEG lost you half your bits of dynamic range.

Go for TIFF.

I'm not sure I can export as TIFF. Anyway, I'll edit the raws first tomorrow, as I said, and then stitch the jpegs.

This thread was more of a "lol check this out" thing, as I've never encountered such banding before (it looks much worse on my laptop, it's quite smoothed out on the forum).

ICE will export as TIFF.

The Jpegs should only be the render of the final, stitched, completely post-processed image.

That's where you introduced your banding.

Turns out this is an entirely ICE thing - the TIFF has banding as well. It might just be derpy conversion using the installed raw codec

Thanks, I've been looking at Ansel Adams stuff lately

Final Raw->PDN->JPG->ICE->export version included. Good job Pentaxforums, 1.6MB image compressed to 200kb. Brilliant.

Oh, yeah, I see you were trying to do your RAW conversion in ICE as well!

Don't do that.

Import TIFFs into it, export TIFFs out of it.

It's panorama software.

Btw, I like your final pic - lots of eye movement going on, Giklab!

Thanks! I wish I could have gotten a bit more of the scene vertically, but oh well.

Yeah, that was just my laziness and a late hour - I just wanted to quickly see if it worked well (and it obviously didn't). I don't think I need to use TIFFs for the level I'm on - JPEGs work just fine for my purposes and are much faster and easier to work with (I don't even shoot raw usually, for various reasons). I did make a point of using raw for the panoramas though (with the skies and all that).
