Scanning negatives has a steep learning curve. I think it can be made into a hobby by itself.

I use a really old version of vuescan with my epson 1660. It gives much better control and results than the bundled software, and seems to support most scanner makes and models. Once you get it set for a particular film it's very reliable, and easy to adjust for different exposures. You can download a trial version that watermarks the scans until you buy a license.

I used to own the Canoscan FS4000 which scanned at 4000x4000 dpi and had built in capability to take scratches out the photo.
It made amazing 50mp+ images which is more then enough to edit and print.
The downside? It was slow. If you want a similar scanner Nikkon used to make an equivalent model but I can't remember the name.
