I haven't brought it up on the pixel forum. Then again, Lightroom pictures tend to be more grainier. I guess you give up something for something else. Capture One does an even better job of controlling the "false coloring".

I shot the following image with my K-50 a while ago. I processed the DNG in RawTherapee & Lightroom. It's a 100% pixel peep image. You'll get an idea.

ISO 12800 RawTherapee: "false coloring" towards the right of EXIT button & just "above" & around the ENTER button.

ISO 12800 Lightroom: more grainier & the color is off slightly.

Then again, this is ISO 12800 coming from an APS-C camera that produces 12bit RAW files. I guess you can say that it's pretty good.

Can't say that I can see it, although at times I think maybe I am seeing something in those spots but it's hard to tell... At times I think maybe I am seeing some super light hazy green or orange, but then at another glance it looks normal. On my second and third monitors (that are a bit darker) I definitely can't see anything...

Possible to describe what the false coloring looks like to you in the RT version above? I assume you've went through each filter/tool you're applying turning them on and off and none of them impact that false coloring, right?

Yeah. I've pretty much exhausted all of my tools & filters. From the NR tools to the demosaicing tools.

It could be a byproduct of the demosaicing algorithm & bayer sensor. It could also be the tone curves, contrast, & color curves. The "false coloring" is basically a large faint patch of a greenish, yellowish, reddish, & blueish tint randomly spread across the image. It's especially noticeable in dark & light areas of the image. Instead of those areas being completely dark or light, you'll see patches that are slightly off colored with the above tints.

The images below show it better.

ISO 12800 RawTherapee: the dark area towards the right should be dark, not "greenish". It's a black table with a semi-"white marble" finish.

ISO 12800 RawTherapee: grainy & more white speckled.

But yeah, this starts happening as the ISO climbs. Most of the current Pentax APS-C cameras (K-5 on forward) look to be good up to ISO 6400 & then the "false coloring" starts to come in.

Ok.. Definitely see it in these examples and see that at times in my images too and have just always called it "noise" haha... Time to post this on the pixel forum!

Feel free to post it if you want to.

One thing that I've noticed is that the K-70 has much better false coloring control. What you see at ISO 12800 on the other APS-C Pentax models is what you roughly get at ISO 25600 on the K-70. The K-1 is obviously better. The future looks good for Pentax.

So basically in a couple years the K3 is going to be trash?

^ No. The K-3 is gonna be good for at least another 6 years at the minimum. Same thing with the current batch of Pentax APS-C cameras. Sensors are advancing, but not by leaps & bounds yet.

My guess is that you'll really start to notice the difference by the year 2025.

On the one hand that's great but on the other, 100,000 actuations doesn't seem like it will actually last that long....

^ That should be good for a long while. It depends on what you shoot & how you shoot. Lots of FPS action? Yeah. Might not last that long. Random single pictures? Gonna last a lot longer.

If I recall, the K-3II is even good for 200,000 actuations. That's like an eternity!

Raw Therapee

I guess I should read through this thread but in the meantime I downloaded it. Can I incorporate RT into LR or does it only work separately?

I'm a beginner so I'm still figuring things out. Can this pic be salvaged with RT?

^ This is a completely independent program. It's basically a "competitor" to Lightroom like DXO, CaptureOne, & similar ones.

As it is, that photo looks pretty neat with the grain. Do you have a RAW file for that image? RawTherapee is mainly used to process RAW files. If you only have a jpeg, GIMP or Photoshop is the way to go.

Yes. I shoot RAW+ on my K-50 to get a jpeg & RAW file at the same time. I'll browse the jpegs on my PC when I get home & only process the images that I really like and/or want to print large. I don't sit there & process every single image. That takes too long.

Well, you can try using GIMP with the GMI'C plugin & try out their noise reduction filters on your jpegs. There are plenty of tutorials online too.
