Three words: Intended...viewing...distance

One can test appropriate dpi with a 4x6 test print and a tape measure. FWIW, for framed art intended for hanging, I seldom print below 200 dpi.

As Stevebrot suggested, 200 dpi on fine art papers would be my suggestion as well. As also mentioned, viewing distance is the key. If the view location is 10-12 feet away, then you can get away with quite a lot, say 125-150 dpi. The media will play quite a roll. If you print on canvas, the texture of the canvas weave will mask softness at closer viewing distances. I've frequently printed at 150 dpi in situations where a buyer has wanted a very large mural sized print from a smaller print file.

In printers terms one dimension is between 18 and 100 inches.
