Trying to set up filter to extract colors, red and yellow in this case,. Went to extract color in the digital filter section, tabbed done, marked the red square in first row, the yellow square in the third row, rows two and four were all the way to the right. Pushed ok. took picture of a tomato and banana, expecting those two things to be in color and the rest of picture in B&W, it all came out in color, what have I not done? thanks in advance.

Are you shooting Raw?
Digital filters are applied to JPG's.

Try shooting RAW+ (that way you're not throwing away any data)

I'm shooting jpeg mode.

dial back the intensity of each color to 2 or 3 bars and try it again

Thankyou calscouser dialing back helped, looks like certain color combinations require different settings, red worked well on lowest setting, where as yellow banana took a couple toys to get the complete banana in yellow.
