Originally posted by LHK My photos live in folders organized by years and events and are stored on the 2TB hard disk in my PC, where it uses some 900 GB as of today.
An external hard disk sits right above the PC as a back up. Another back up hard disk is stored in a desk drawer. Then there are two more back ups, one stored at my wife's place, who lives separate from me, and at my parents place hundreds of k away; I frequently rotate the lot. This way they can have a look at my pictures while the size of the meteorite needed to extinguish my photos is maximized.
I keep the JPG and the according raw files. It's a race between the ever growing MP of my cameras and the size of hard disks, which suits me fine at the moment. Still, the K-1 is munching away at disk space.

Wow, that's certainly mitigating the risk.

Originally posted by SpecialK I used store photos by shooting date (it is the first part of the file name). However, the list of folders got long after 10 years and the date was meaningless except to keep the shots in chronological order. This past week have I have totally revamped it to be by category - vacation, air shows, various museum types, etc. It now matches (more or less) my web albums on Slickpic. Also, since each subject is grouped together rather than scattered over multiple dates, I can sometimes weed out some of the dupes.
My graves photos presented its own issue - they were in mmddyyFirstLast format :-( I changed them (3500) to Last First, with no date.
I still temporarily keep the new shots in date folders until I back them up.
PS. I tried tagging images for a few weeks and found that it did not work too well - too many tags per photo, so I gave up on that.
I have adopted the themes structure as well. Vacations, Birthdays, School Events, Sports ... etc.
I find that works well for me, and it's much easier to find images.
