Mac greyed out programs

another mac problem for me
A couple of days ago I had some unusual pop ups appear from Norton. I can't remember what they are but do remember one saying it wants permission to take screen shots.
my wife jumps on it today and can't run most of the programs. I went into the folders for programs and they were all greyed out. some are missing
I uninstalled Norton thinking that the firewall was blocking programs but that didn't help.
about the only thing it can run is google chrome, mail, iphotos
I did a scan with the antivirus and nothing showed up

any ideas how to get this running besides wiping everything out?
I thought mac was better with this stuff

thanks

randy

just a thought - have you rebooted and watched for any messages concerning applications or permissions?

I don't use Norton on my mac, so I'm wondering if there was something critical in the pop-ups from Norton....

I did a reboot and a couple of windows came up asking for permission. I tried to drag Norton to the trash bin to delete it and it would just pop back out

Permission to take screenshots?

That sounds suspicious.

What is the exact wording from the windows asking for permission?

It sounds like Ed Norton Antivirus has quarantined your programs...you might want to try turning everything off in the app.

Is there an Uninstall program to run?

Failing that reboot the computer in recovery mode. (Hold down Command R while rebooting)

Run the Disk Utility and click the First Aid button. This will check the drive and fix permissions. It might help, or it might not.

Edit: I see that permissions are protected automatically in El Capitan...

One other thing to try, reboot in Safe Mode and see if they are still greyed out (Hold Shift key while booting).

Restarted it and no windows appeared. Antivirus scan says it's clean.

I tried safe mode... same results. All programs greyed out.
Tried a software removal tool and greyed out programs appear
Tried command R and the first aide but nothing has changed :[

It was some application called "screen sharing" that popped up not screen shots

This seems likely. Do you have any recent backups? Otherwise. I'd try poking around in Norton and seeing if there's an 'unquarantine' option.

Shutting everything off may not be enough. Does Norton have a Quarantine list? Something like 'Show Quarantine List' in one of the menus?

I borrowed an image from another web site because it was the first good one I could find. Credit to the help.edovia.com web site.

Did the window you saw look something like the image below? If so, go into System Preferences -> Screen Sharing and check what is set in the "Allow Access For:" area of the window. There are two radio buttons - first is All Users, second allows you to set user access explicitly.

Do you normally use Facetime or similar apps to communicate with other folks?

What version of Mac OS X are your using?

The next thing I would check is my logs - if you know how to use the Console app, open it and look for activity around the time that you saw that initial message.

I checked this and it tells me screen sharing is on.
I tried to uninstall Norton and the Uninstaller is missing!

There is nothing in the quarantine list

Thanks

Uninstalled Norton and nothing has changed.
When I click on the pages application icon instead of opening the program it just opens the application folder where everything is greyed out
Frustrating

Check the Mac App Store through ->App Store...->Purchases and see if Pages is listed there. If so, you can just uninstall Pages and reinstall it.

Why on earth would you install a crappy anti virus like Norton on a Mac anyhow? No offense intended it isn't the fault of your Mac that a third party app screwed it up. Most people don't run any AV on their Macs at all.

Just a thought. Where did this copy of Norton come from? Is it really Norton?

You don't really need Pages installed on the Mac to use it. Just go to iCloud.com and use the browser version...
