There is a protocol of what you did in the developing menu in LR, but this of course only works properly for the initial picture you worked on and not the other pictures you just copied the developing settings onto.
Great! I'll look into that. I suppose one could always work their way back in the history and then resync.

Sure it shows you all the cool stuff you would be doing to a file if you committed to the changes, but if you decide you don’t like where you are at, you can only revert to the initial state
You can revert to any state of the development in the History panel.

A downside is any change you make after reverting erases all the steps that had come after. Or maybe that's a good thing if you totally screwed up and want the record cleaned.

There is also the "Snapshot" option which lets you save the photo at various history states, or Virtual Copies if you wanted to fork alternate edits out. Neither really preserves the full history panel, but they can be handy.

Yeah, a vague analogy to backups in IT is it's a differential rather than incremental restore.

So, if it's a concern, we just get smart in our workflow about the Snapshot or Virtual Copies you mentioned.

After the cropping, horizon correction, white balance, rough exposure, we can create one virtual copy for each treatment we're exploring … black and white, high saturation and contrast, vintage film, etc, and our experiments on one don't affect the other, but they all have the benefit of the settings we did in that common starting point.

Tangent re. renting software: I used to work for a company that charged $100k first year plus $35k each additional year. That was a fair price, considering it was for one specific industry, with perhaps 1000 potential USA customers if every company who could benefit purchased it. Actual customer base was 100 and growing when I departed.
