AI Can Now Fix Your Grainy Photos by Only Looking at Grainy Photos

QuoteQuote:
What if you could take your photos that were originally taken in low light and automatically remove the noise and artifacts? Have grainy or pixelated images in your photo library and want to fix them? This deep learning-based approach has learned to fix photos by simply looking at examples of corrupted photos only.

The work was developed by researchers from NVIDIA, Aalto University, and MIT, and is being presented at the International Conference on Machine Learning in Stockholm, Sweden this week.

Excessive grain is for silos and fields, not pictures.

Intelligent is a bit of a stretch. Most AI like this basically boils down to an automated statistical analysis of a large set of data.

I was hoping this as the accelerator chip in the KP, K-70 and K-1II when first mentioned by Ricoh, but that one is a traditional noise filter.

As soon as we've eliminated all artifacts from photography, then grainy, noisy, distorted, soft, etc, images
will come back into vogue with a vengeance. When that happens there will be all manner of filters and
dedicated apps designed to give 'character' to our perfect images. It's already happening in small measure
with film look plugins. Personally, I'm not much bothered by lens defects per se, and only correct as necessary
to correct distracting artifacts. Grain, as one such 'defect', can actually have quite a lot of character.

Topaz Labs has a new product that looks like it's doing something similar.

AI Clear – Topaz Labs

I haven't tried it, so I can't speak to the performance, but it looks worth a trial download

Most of the time grain isnt a problem for a well composed image. Improving noise in a non pleasant image does not make it better (unless looking at an image wuth 50% to 100% zoom). Some people even like some grain in images , especialy b&w images.

And I thought the "Oh boy" and "star eater" would obviate the need for "air" quotes around "intelligent".
