Don't overlook the ability to set your most-used modules as favorites; that way you can do most of your work in the first module group.

Yes that looks like the only way to do it. I thought you could selectively place modules in each module group but, no, they go to their preassigned group.
So I have the star group with WB , Profile denoise, Exposure, Graduated Density, Base curve and Tone Curve all default opened. That covers 90% of my work.

Very cool - 3.0 is a major rewrite - both UI and performance have been worked on.

I think I'll wait a bit though, to hear if it's stable enough. Apparently the DB is different so going from 2.6 to 3.0 is a one-way street.

So far it's an RC, so you'd better test it on a separate DB and be willing to report bugs.

Not correct!

What is out is the first release candidate of Darktable 3.0 - “darktable 3.0.0rc0”.
To get the full information about the new stuff (the new stuff is huge!) and access to the installation files for the several operating systems go to darktable 3.0.0rc0 released | darktable.

The final full 3.0 version should be available around Christmas – last year it was in the 24th of December.

Best regards,

I have been checking out the latest code. The dt team have hit it out of the park with this release. Many may never get past the Basic Adjustments module. But if you need more, it is covered. I am getting my builds from here:

Install package graphics:darktable:master / darktable

Unfortunately, only linux builds there.

Even less than a month from the final release of Darktable 3.0 (if the timeline of last year’s is maintained), they keep on putting out new RC’s, being just out 3.0.0rc2.

This new version (an detailed information about what is new /corrected) can be obtain directly from GitHub: Release darktable 3.0.0rc2 released · darktable-org/darktable · GitHub

Best regards,

I find the new filmic RGB module quite difficult to use. For some scenes it's helpful with handling highlights but in my experience there's a bit to much back and forth between the tabs to get a good result. The tone equaliser is very intuitive and useful however.

If you have a chance to watch the developer, Aurelien Pierre's, youtube video on his new filmic rgb module, you will see that his intention is for a user to followup enabling and adjusting filmic rgb with his tone equalizer.module for optimum effect. I too struggled with the new module for a while but it has become my SOP now versus using a basecurve.

I'm not sure filmic could be standard in my workflow. I feel there are few to many assumptions built into the module. Its quite hard to do minor adjustments. Strangely filmic implementations work well for CGI work.

With filmic, I end up just using the default settings and if adjustments are needed I'll use other modules. I do most of my adjustments in Brightness, Contrast and Saturation, and in the Exposure module for setting a black point.

With time I want to dwell more into it, but I can't seem to be able to improve things much!

Sometimes I'll even double it up with a base curve which I know is a no-no - but it can add to the 3D effect of older manual lenses, I guess due to the layers of contrast handling. These lenses have lower contrast anyway, so the end result is usually pretty interesting.
