Today I say goodbye to flickr. I'll buy a hard disk external. Thank you flickr.
Be careful, Dagoban, that sounds like you're doing without an off-site backup.

If you bought *two* external hard disks you can get such a thing going yourself.

I expected that when smugmug bought Flickr changes would come, now the Pro membership price will be doubled. But as long as they keep the functionality and interface close to the same it will be ok.

I can't believe that Photobucket is still in existence, I could not even download my pics from their former free site.

Curious if 500px selling subscriptions at 75% off today had anything to do with this) price comes up to the same amount - $35 per year for their pro subscription..

Lucky you!

For those who already have a Pro account, like me, they will be hit with the full $49.95 fee.
Anyway, I have sent a couple of emails which, to my utter surprise, were answered within a few minutes; something that used to take weeks or months ... sometimes (often I should say) never replied to).
I don't see that much difference between the "old" Pro and this "new" one though.

Important point you make here. I don't use Flickr as an external backup although I do upload a lot of my photos there. I do however keep all my photos including raw files on my computer hard drive and backup regularly to two separate external drives. I know for complete security one should be kept away from my house, but that is a step too far for me. If the worst happened my raw files would not be on the top of my worry list.

.
Mine renewed in early August, so I got the grandfathered price of $25 one last time. They started sending out eMails to grandfathered members who were coming up for renewal about the price increase in mid-August. The price increased to $50 several years before SmugMug took over...

The price of a new Pro account had doubled to $50 long before Smugmug took over, we were only supposed to get the grandfathered price for 1 year. That turned into several...I was lucky enough to get it this year too...they increased it a week after my account renewed.

I'm on the fence on whether to go new pro or not. I have a pro account now with about 1700 images on Flickr. I rely on hard drives and cd roms for my photo back ups. and I cull my flickr photos about once a year. I may try the new pro for a year to see if it's going to give me any discernable benefits to how I use Flickr now..

I’ve had a Flickr account since Yahoo was a thing but I don’t even have 100 photos there. I pay for and use Pbase for my Forum Links (I have a lot of trouble making the Flickr embed link work here) and keep my files on my own file server at home under a personal domain, and the good stuff in archive folders and burned to DVD. I don’t have Facebook or Instagram. I don’t Have anything Cloud-based. I started a Wordpress site, but I expose as little as possible to the web except here, so it never really got off the ground.

I actually have more prints in file drawers now than I have posted to the web.

Well so much for Flickr not changing.

Isn't that what the other outfit that took it over said when they took it over?

It's not really a change. There are still two levels of membership, Yahoo tried to change it to one level of membership (free with 1 TB, pay to remove ads) and had to bring back the Pro level...Before the change to 1 TB there was a limit of 200 images...
