About a year ago, I asked the dt devs if they were ever going to package up dt in either snap or flatpak formats. They had no interest in doing so. Glad the 3rd parties are stepping up to the plate for this. It is very convenient for those who want to run the latest and greatest and/or different versions of an app,,, at the expense of hard drive space.

I'm running Darktable on Linux Mint - I'm currently on Mint 19.1. Several months ago when I went to Linux Mint 18.3 I installed the Flatpak (Flathub) version of Darktable from Mint's Software Manager.

One of the advantages of running Flatpaks is that all your installed Flatpak applications are automatically updated whenever you boot your system. And since the Flatpak application repository is kept up-to-date, that means I got Darktable 2.6 very soon after it became available.

I like the features that the Flatpak-based applications offer; not everyone does. However, if you're wanting to run the latest version of Darktable without having to jump through a lot of hoops it's a good way to go in my opinion.
This seems to be a great idea. I hadn't heard of Flatpak. So I removed DT 2.4.4 and installed flatpak DT via the Software Manager. It thinks DT is installed. But wait, there's less.

Launching Darktable from the menu leads to nothing happening. Ditto from the launcher in Software Manager. Inspection of processes shows three modules related to Flatpak but none labeled Darktable. /usr/bin has three flatpak related files, all small, but no Darktable file. I must not be paid up somewhere.

Perhaps the DT PPA needs to be removed. Perhaps I need to reboot (shades of Windows!).

Edit: Attempting to install from the flathub website seemed at first to be successful, but attempting to run DT led to a complaint, viz.
Code:
bwrap: Can't mount tmpfs on /newroot/dev/shm: No such file or directory
It seems to be expecting a file system dissimilar to what I have.

There is an open ticket out for this bug on debian. See:

new issues with /dev/shm on sysVinit system (bwrap: Can't mount tmpfs on /newroot/dev/shm: No such file or directory) · Issue #2267 · flatpak/flatpak · GitHub

Since Mint now bases against debian and not ubuntu, this would likely be hitting you also. Debian is usually quick to fix bugs.

Thanks for finding that.

Edit added 11Jan19
OK, having performed the CLI command:
Code:
sudo chmod 1777 /dev/shm
to fix the permissions problem, I could successfully perform the flatpak command:
Code:
flatpak run org.darktable.Darktable
Darktable 2.6.0 opened and once pointed to my test 645Z PEF file, opened it successfully. I closed Darktable, checked the Menu, and there was a Darktable entry there with its properties showing that it performs a flatpak call. Clicking this entry also starts Darktable 2.6.0. The test image seems to be the PEF high resolution file and not just the embedded jpeg thumbnail. Previously, DT 2.4.4 could not open that PEF file unless I used Raw Therepee to convert it to a TIFF file.

Now to learn rudimentary DT operation.

P.S. Some clarifying directions:

Flatpak Darktable was installed from Flathub? An app store and build service for Linux, but it seems that Software Manager recognizes it as installed by Software Manager.

The flathub link gets one the file org.darktable.Darktable.flatpakref

This is installed with the CLI command:
Code:
flatpak install flathub org.darktable.Darktable
within whatever directory it is stored

Then the permissions on /dev/shm need to be fixed as above followed by the flatpak run command as above.

Hello fellow Pentaxians!

Had a question about tethering Darktable with pentax 645z in Windows 10. I used the Zadig tool to install the winusb driver and in Darktube a new tethering session will open. But I lose function of the camera, no buttons including the shutter will not respond.
In the camera menu USB option. I tried to use both PTP and Mass storage option but no luck. Any advice from you folks on how to over come this?

Also is there a way to setup a hot folder or a watch folder in Darktable for Windows.

Cheers!

Just a confirmation that flatpak is loading the latest darktable in Mint 18.3: Noticed today that 2.6.2 is now showing under the darktable logo. I hadn't been looking for it so I don't know when it transitioned.

I'm currently trying Darktable and it's tethering feature. It detects my K-1 on Mac as a "USB PTP Class Camera" but there is no operation possible. I can't trigger the shutter or anything.

Has anyone tried this before?

There is a troubleshooting section which I tried but didn't get far with the command line snippets ("no such file or directory"). It says it relies on gphoto2. I downloaded it but I don't know where to put it or what to do with it. Could anyone give me a hand?

There is a menu item on your K-1 where you choose between PTP USB function and another one I can't remember right now. Make sure you are in PTP mode.
