What techniques in photoshop do you use to deal with this? Find that one thing works better than something else?

I rarely get a bad case, but I'll use a feathered high-pass selection followed with a selective color desaturation. If I have to (rarely), I'll make a new transparent color layer and airbrush/clone from underlying layers, over the desaturated fringe.

Since you are using Photoshop, use ACR to remove the PF using the built in tool.
