Joe Cornish on post processing

I found it such a succinct but deep understanding of how to render final images, without mentioning actual methods. To roughly paraphrase, he says to use luminance, contrast and saturation to emphasize and de-emphasize parts in the image. The rest of the video is also interesting, there's a discussion on the environmental impact of travel and travel photography and how Joe Cornish sees local photography be a challenge to yourself and less impactful.

I must admit a wry smile when I listened to Joe Cornish talk about dodging and burning being his main post method. Photoshop has a vast array of tools (and I use many of them), but the basic idea of dodging and burning a photo to balance the image for luminosity, colour, etc is a rather tried and tested approach. Where PS excels nowadays is the D&B can be done non destructively with a finesse that previous darkroom users never had available to them.

My guess is when a lot of folk start of using PS there's an urge to throw as many tools as they can at an image, because they can. After a while this urge dies down and a more considered nudge to a photo becomes the norm. Yes there are times when I've had to make elaborate selections and composite an image but it's rare. I can see where Joe Cornish is coming from ...
