Some K-1 raw cannot be edited by PDCU

Hi guys,

Because of the Wuhan Corona virus, I recently have some leisure time to look back my previous K-1 photos (in DNG format).

Some of them I have already edited and saved as JPG before, but I want to apply a different color style and white balance to make another JPG.

After I finished editing with PDCU, it says "failed to process", please see in the attachment.

The thing is, not all my K-1 raw files have this problem, only some of them have this.

The PDCU is now ver. 5.8.6, can anyone give me an idea what is wrong with it ??

Thank you in advance !

If you haven't already, close everything down and restart your computer, and then try again. It could be a memory problem that just needs cleared.

Tried, no luck.

Just did some test...

If I only do a few (one or two) changes to RAW, like changing the EV and w and then save as JPG, it works

So... could it be a file size issue ? or too much work load for my laptop ??

The CPU is i7-8550U 1.8GHz, with 8GB Ram

If you know which files cause a problem, compare them with ones that do not. Do not only look at EXIF but also at Windows file information. Can also be that you try to save it to a folder of which access is blocked by Windows. So try to save them to another folder. Preferably on your laptop self and not on a network drive.

What are you trying to save as ? jpeg or tiff ? Are you resizing the image before saving ?

You laptop might be running out of memory especially if the Raw images are pixel shift. I think if you switch off pixel shift processing it will only use one of the Raw pixel shift frames.

I have seen this with my K-3II and my K20D when shooting DNG's.
I modify the EXIF information to include Lens Name and in certain images I will "correct" GPS information. PDCU does not like you messing with the EXIF information.

I have run a few DNG images through LR (v6.14) and after LR writes crap back into the file - PDCU will not open them. These days I use PDCU only for pixel shift but it really gives disappointing results, so I use it only on very rare instances. If you create panoramas in either LR (DNG's) or Affinity Photo (TIFF's) PDCU will not open them either. My machine has plenty of memory (24GB) so that is not my issue.

Just did some more tests...

I figure out that the problem would come out, if some certain DNG photos are edited by:

"Lens Aberration Correction > Color Fringe Correction"

Only this matters, all other changes is fine.

But the thing is ..... I wanna edit the photos taken by FA-31mm Limited, this Color Fringe issue is quite significant on FA-31mm.

Thanks for the suggestion, but this is not the case here.

Files got the problem and files got no problem are almost the same size, around 44-42MB.

Plus, I still can edit and save JPG from pixel-shift DNG taken by my K-1.

My goal is from DNG to JPG, so that I can share to my wife.

No resize, 36MP.

I did try with different JPG quality, from 1* to 4*.

No luck, PDCU still say "failed to process"

Try resizing the image. 36MP is huge for any kind of screen viewing. I resize to 2158 x 1440 pixels (3.1 MP) to suit my monitor. It may be that your computer is just not powerful enough to process such large image files.

Most probably running out of memory or graphics board memory. I've had it with mine as well and I'm running i7-2820QM @ 2.3GHz with 16GB RAM.

I don't use the Pentax software but have had struggles in the past occasionally with Photoshop and Silkypix when processing raw images, especially when trying to process multiple files.

The biggest change I made was when I switched to a new computer running windows 10 and more importantly a SSD where I install my programs. No hangs now.

Thank you guys for all the suggestion.

The problem suddenly gone, out of no where.

I can edit and save JPG of the files which I couldn't before.

Kind of X-FILES !
