I love my Dell XPS M1530. They're not too expensive, and they're pretty powerful.
Screen isn't *ideal* for photo editing, but I haven't calibrated it either.

Photo editing works well on my Compaq 6715s with enhanced memory capacity... but I think you should look for "glossy" monitor types. These show more color than the matte ones.

Besides that, I have a Apple Ibook too, which is great for looking at flickrpictures and a tad faster.

Running an Lenovo X61 tablet. The X200 is more powerful and newer, but more expensive. The color reproduction isn't great, but you want an external monitor for that anyway.
