New ON1 NoNoise

ON1 have announced "ON1 NoNoise AI", a standalone noise reduction utility obviously designed to compete with the excellent Topaz DeNoise. It will be released in June.

They claim it will give "better results than any other noise reduction application on the market", and is faster. This is a big call. We will see. The images in their advertising don't convince me, yet.

I wrote to ON1 asking if this new capability will be incorporated in their main ON1 Photo Raw photo-processing software, or just be a standalone. They said there has been no announcement of such a move, which does not rule it out. It seems unimaginable to me that it would not be, but it may take some time. Perhaps in ON1 PhotoRaw 2022?

Yes, I was tempted too. However, the workflow looked awkward in conjunction with my main photo editor, ON1 Photo Raw, so I hesitated. If ON1 are introducing their own equivalent, it will suit me better.

Challenge!

By the way, ON1 have issued a challenge.

They ask you to submit a noisy DNG Raw file.

"In the ON1 NoNoise Challenge you submit noisy images to us! Our moderators will sift through the submissions, process noisy photo selections using ON1 NoNoise AI, and share the results on the challenge page. We'll choose four images each week leading up to the release and post the before/after photo. Those who have their photo selected get ON1 NoNoise AI free of charge."

DXO deep prime is pretty impressive. But the hubris of calling something “no noise”. That’s just asking for trouble.

Looks like we'll all be looking for noisy photos, thanks for the heads up on the new software.

Well, logically, it's no different to "deNoise".

I suspect they were just playing with the fact that "no" is an anagram of "on".

To me they are different but in retrospect you are right.

Rather tellingly, they don't even mention DxO DeepPrime (which is at work in both PhotoLab and PureRaw) when they are comparing ON1 NoNoise with "the other leading image noise removal products" on the market. (Instead, they are including Lightroom, which is not known for particular finesse at noise reduction.) And while the noise removal in the samples might appear impressive, the retention of detail ... um ... does not so much.

However, there's nothing wrong with a bit of competion. As a PhotoLab user, I wouldn't want the people at DxO to become complacent.

An excellent observation and a good point. I’m unclear how much of the market each processing suite has but I would wager DXO isn’t as large as many. I love the product and would hope it continues to improve.

It would be great if the utility were to remove the white dots from very low light images from the K1. Doing LENR all the time is a real PIS. It makes long 4 minute exposures - an even longer 8 minutes. And when you are stitching, its becomes a hour long task per final image.

As a fellow DxO PhotoLab user, that was my view too. No noise needn't mean no detail.

It's also very handy having noise reduction integrated into the RAW processor rather than as a plugin.

Not unimaginable that they will find a way to make users pay for it though, apart from requiring an upgrade to the next version of the processing software. DxO have found two other ways to get users to pay for additional features:
- The ViewPoint plugin (for correcting wide angle distortion) is standalone, but integrates with the RAW processor when both are installed.
- DxO has basic and advanced versions of the processing software (Essentials and Elite, respectively). Attractive new features like DeepPrime are only in the Elite version.

I guess every processing program will offer AI NR in the next few years.

I was all set to pull the trigger on DXO PureRaw, but I may wait to see how this compares.
