I have recently purchased an Epson V600. It comes with various trays for negative and slide films that you place over the glass. Irrespective of the tray used, the lid is articulated in such a way that when closing it, it will always be parallel to the glass, so the 'thickness' issue that you ask about is not really relevant. Does this answer your question?
