looking at your dropbox images it is very obvious that the modified images are sharper.

Well you have the TC and the Lens and also DXO PhotoLab! What's stopping you?

That could be a game changer Will have to try this with a few files, perhaps even some "proper" comparison with and without TC, with and without the hack.

Since this subject needed a refresh for me as well, I took another look at my exiftool scripts today and improved them.
Perhaps also useful for some others?

Using a cmd file that can edit an entire folder.

1) To Update FocalLength (Previous version I set them always to 250 in case >250, now focallength / 1.4
set DngPath="D:\some foldername"
exiftool -overwrite_original "-SerialNumber<focallength" "-focallength<${focallength#;$_*=0.714285714286}" -if "$focallength#>250" %DngPath%

2) RestoreFocalLength; copy previous saved FocalLength back from SerialNumber (contains 'mm') | Can be used for DNG as well as JPG files
Beware, these SerialNumbers are MY serial numbers.
set DngPath="D:\some foldername"
exiftool -overwrite_original "-focallength<SerialNumber" "-SerialNumber=6100229" -if "$Model# eq 'PENTAX K-3' and $SerialNumber=~/mm/" %DngPath%
exiftool -overwrite_original "-focallength<SerialNumber" "-SerialNumber=8085878" -if "$Model# eq 'PENTAX K-3 Mark III' and $SerialNumber=~/mm/" %DngPath%
