Anyone use an iPod for storage?

My wife is thinking that she may want an iPod for her birthday, and I'm curious if they can read .PEF files to view the preview JPEG.

From what I've read, I could transfer the files to the hard drive for storage, but the last thing that I could find was from 2006 and it couldn't read the RAW files.

Hi Dave,
With the camera adaptor, you can down load to an ipod.

Jpeg is recognised and you can view your photos. RAW is a different story, while the ipod will store them for you, it doesn't let you view them, you need to download the photos back to a computer to view.

I have used mine for travel storage, although the first time I used it I got a helluva fright when I thought I had lost all my RAW files!!.

Personally, I prefer to buy a few extra cards.

Cheers.

Just be careful, Apple is now disabling disk-style access to the iPods such as the iPod Touch. Unless you are willing to hack the firmware (Jailbreak) you will not be able to store just any old file. iTunes does allow you to sync photos from a specified folder on your PC, so you can do that with picture files. I cannot say for sure that the files are not resized to fit the iPod, they may not be fully recoverable, lets say, if you were to retrieve them onto another PC.

An older iPod may be a better choice if this is a major reason for getting one.

Wow, good to know about the file restrictions. Does jailbreaking void the warranty?
