cranky customer...

Hi everybody!

I did a shoot the otherday and the client dumped the images from SD to His MAC, i am still waiting for the cable to download images to my computers s i still dont know anything about it. (i have done 3 or 4 shoots and they have all just taken the card)

Problem is i get a call saying he cant open something called a PEF in Photoshop, i researched a few links here etc yet nothing seemed conclusive. can anybody point me in the right direction for A) an understanding of PEF and why it is and B) what i can do/need to download to deal with it and have my MAC and or PC accept these images.

Do i need to load a disc? (i bought 2nd hand and didnt get one)

Sorry for the long winded, much appreciated for the answer.

Cheers

I believe (and I'm not 100% sure about this) PEF is a proprietary RAW format for Pentax. PS should be able to open it natively, or I believe there is a plug-in you can get for it (or possibly process it in - camera if they give you the sd card back).
Here is at least one good link I found about this:

This one. You should be careful to post in the correct forums. For one reason, you will get a better response and another it helps when other people are searching the forums.
If in doubt, ask.

PEF is in fact Pentax's very own RAW format, to view on a PC a codec is supplied on the Pentax website. Also the latest version of Picassa can be used to view PEF files.
As to how a PEF can be viewed on a Mac, I really don't have a clue.

If the mac is reasonably up to date, the PEF will preview just fine in the finder or using the Preview app. Even better, iPhoto should open it right up into its library. No RAW processing options, but it'll open right up.

Any image editing application (Photoshop, Elements, etc) supporting Abobe Camera Raw (ACR) version 3.7 will open Pentax PEF image files from the K10D, while applications supporting ACR 4.5+, including the current version 5.2, will open PEF files from the K10D, K20D, and K200D.

If the Pentax K10D, K20D, or K200D cameras are set to save DNG format raw files instead of PEF, any image editing application supporting ACR 2.4 and later will open those DNG image files.

By the way, everyone, "raw" is a word, not an acronym or title, so is not capitalized in any way unless used within a title (e.g. Adobe Camera Raw) or at the beginning of a sentence.

Big question is OS version is the customer using and how up-to-date are they. IIRC both 10.4.11 and 10.5.2 (or later) should open any PEF in Aperture, iPhoto, or Preview w/o a problem. Since I don't use PS anymore I'm not sure what you need there.

Up to photoshop CS2, bridge should handle PEF up to the K10d.

For k20D, you need CS3 or CS4 so you cna get the latest version of bridge to afford it.

One of the reasons I don't own a K20d is that I'm at CS2, and it's not just the $800 body, but another several hundred dollars to upgrade my workflow which is currently bridge and CS2.

CS3 and the Bridge supplied with it, handle PEF without and any drama's, make sure that you have all the ACR updates too.

I have a K20D & CS2. No issue in handling files. RAW, JPEG TIFF.

Something I do when I shoot for a customer who wants the files right away is to set the camera to record both a Raw and a JPEG for each image. Then I burn a CD with the JPEGs for them on the spot and take the PEF or DNG Raw files home for further processing should it be needed.
