how did he do it

Hey everyone,

I have a quick question. I discovered this website of a local photographer. I love what he did here. I'm wondering if anyone could give me an idea how he processed these shots. For example photo #3 is what I'm looking at.

Precious Memories Photography

Please note this is not my website.

It's a layered composite within Photoshop or a similar editor. The image of the young ladies are at least two layers with the photo on top converted to b&W and then the center made transparent to allow the young lady in the middle of the group (still in color) from the layer below to show through. That image was then flattened and the right side of the image faded/painted out to white to allow the text to show better. Finally, the text was added to a top layer and the entire image flattened and sized to post online.

If you research each of those steps (layers, convert to b&W, making part of an image transparent, etc), you'll find plenty of step-by-step guides online to help you complete a similar image. Do note there are several ways to accomplish each step, so feel free to dig around until you find the right one for you.

I guess I should have given everyone the correct link. This is the link to the pictures that I'm looking at

Precious Memories Photography- powered by SmugMug

The pictures that I can't figure out are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 16, 18, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 65, 71, 97, 107, 108, 109, 111, 112, 113, 119, 121, 122, 123

If you look at these you should get an idea of what I'm talking about. I'm not trying to figure out how he did each individual picture but how he generally processed them as a whole.

Any ideas?

he just really knows photoshop, there's no one thing he did, except i can see how he gave a lot an hdr style effect to make everything in the picture more vibrant

Have to second eclipsed. He more than likely has the styles as templates than just creates new masks for each photo. You can create a series of different templates and, except for actually creating the masks automate/speed up the process.

after looking thru his galleries, he's also good at what he does, he doesn't just add his 'photoshop' touch, he seems to take really good pictures to start with and then makes them pop just a bit more. also, he's got almost 150k images in that gallery, 2k from this "year" alone

Yep. The best Photoshopper (is that even a word?) can only make a bad picture mediocre. He is, first off a good photographer and a creative one at that.

Besides a good amount of HDR and single color treatment, this guy shows a master class on how to use superwide lenses in weddings.

I sometimes wish he didn't.

For my taste, many of these are missing the mark: s/he's transformed a fine photo of a marrying couple into an exhibition of Photoshop skills.

Suddenly the photo is about the photographer/post-processor rather than the people and the moment. The effects, to me, get very much in the way and seem self-absorbed.

YMMV and I certainly admire the variety of effects.

1) they are great shots to begin with

2) if the customers want a fart can and triple wing spoiler put on their Jaguar E-Type.....so be it

Actually having some fun images such as these with some crazy effects would at a little variety to a wedding photo collection. I can see where brides/grooms would enjoy them
