Photograph sizes

This maybe a strange question however, I was at the photo lap over the weekend looking at processing enlargements and came away a bit confused and the attendant was not helpful.

Can someone be helpful, if you take a image what size of photograph can be processed without any croping?

ie: 8 x 12 is fine however 8 x 10 is a cropped verison.

how about the other sizes?

this may not seem to be of importance, it is to me, as when I take a photo I would like to know that the finsihed shot is what is processed.

Many thanks in advance.

It is all about aspect ratio Aspect ratio (image) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Pentax DSLR (like most other SLR) take images with an aspect ratio of 3:2, like 3000 x 2000 pixels (for a 6 MPixel camera), or 4500 x 3000 (for a 14.5 MPixel camera).

If the printing paper has the same aspect ratio, then no cropping will take place.
8 x 12 inch has an 3:2 aspect ratio as well (12/8 = 3/2). So, no cropping.

For other sizes, you now know the answer as well.

Any size that is a 2:3 aspect ratio will be a full frame print from a DSLR.
So, in inches: 2x3 inch wallet, 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, etc. would all be printed without cropping.

While what my esteemed colleagues write is true, in my experience the photo lab machines crop a few pixels 'all around' even if you give a file that has the correct aspect ratio. This can affect picture elements close to the edges, so do a couple of practice prints before submitting a great stack to see if you need to account for this.
