owners of Nikon Coolscan 5000?

What software are you using?

The packaged software from Nikon is junk when it comes to black and white scanning

to get the real dynamic range out of a photo, i have to scan it as a positive (slide) and then invert in photoshop, its ridiculous.

same goes for colour negatives, an over exposed colour neg can only be salvaged by scanning it as a slide, but then you get wonky colours, even when inverted, so then the only saving grace is BW.

my friend keeps saying its a software issue,

what software do YOU use??

I have multiple tools.

1. Silverfast
2. VueScan

Heck, sometime I just scan directly into Elements.

woof!

Yes, I experience the same problem. I pretty much inactivate ICE feature. No noise or scratch reduction during the scan. Avoid high resolution scan as it tends to over-expose the image.

I utilise my photoshop skill to clean up the scanned images instead.

I use SilverFast SE with the multiple exposure feature (Coolscan 4000).
It produces 48Bit images with certainly satisfactory dynamic range (better than a single exposure could deliver). It even has color negative profiles.
It does the job but boy, do I hate this software. So many little hickups to live with. But hey, getting the job done is all what counts, no?

the 5000ED is just plain dumb when it comes to black and white negative scanning.

Gooshin, from the images you have posted, you should turn off ICE feature as well as auto-exposure.

When you scan the films on high resolution, this problem will accentuate a lot more.

ice is turned off, both cases

enabling and disabling auto exposures yields no change (for me) in result

also thats 4000dpi, the native resolution of the 5000ED

also please note that this is in fact an overexposed picture, i used an external flash gun and was a mere 3 feet away from the target and i think i had the settings wrong,

but the point is that negative film has such great latitude, that should i have using an enlarger i would sitll be able to salvage it even better than the scanner, so the point is to get the scanner to get as close as possible.

yes, the results however are no better than my "tweaked" method, in fact the image is much flatter and requires a good amount of PP to get a pop back into it.

here is an example, although i realize i didnt work enough, its flatness is obvious.

if you don't need anything more than 3000x2000, downtown camera does a good job scanning B&W

Yes tyo Vuescan and or Yes to Silverfast.
But. . . Another big issue is if you use the "digital ice" on some film it will go wacky on you no matter what software you use. The infrared channel can really mess up the scan sometimes. Also calibration is a must and to go further, choosing the right film profile will help some can even be downloaded form the internet.
