Pentax Photo Browser "View Image" resolution?

Hello,

When using Pentax Photo Browser (ver. 3.51), if I open a jpeg file using the View Image button (Main Image View), the image will fill my screen yet have a dull and unsharpened look. If I click on Slideshow, the same image will reload as the first image in the slideshow, but will have a definite sharper and brighter appearance. I have my "Window Size for Main Image" resolution set to 1024 x 768, my maximum monitor resolution. If it's possible, I cannot figure out how to get a file to appear the same onscreen when viewed in the Main Image Window as it does when running in Slideshow. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I don't really know, but since no one else has responded, I'll ventue a guess that the "slideshow" feature is adding sharpening when displaying your images full screen, but the regular viewer is not. If you like the effect of the sharpening and want to see it all the time, that suggests you should probably actually add sharpening to your photo using a photo editor so the sharpening is there already and you don't have to depend on programs to add it for you when displaying them. Or you could turn up the in-camera sharpening.

Marc,

Thanks for your response. I've noticed this regardless of the sharpening level that is set in camera. Whatever the +/- sharpening setting may have been (or the image tone setting also) the Slideshow resolution is much better than just clicking "View Image" and opening a single file. I have no complaints or problems achieving the printed results I want. I really noticed this since upgrading from a K100D to a K200D. My guess is that "View Image" defaults to some resolution that is not controllable regardless of file size, unlike Slideshow mode where it can be adjusted.

Well, whatever sharpening level you have applied in camera, the slide show is presumably adding more still. It would be interesting to compare what the slide show does when you 8don't* have sharpening turned up in camera against what the regular view image does when you have sharpening turned up all the way.

Also, if you haven't tried shooting in Bright mode, you might try that, to see if that gives you more sharpening.

The point being, I would bet that View Image is showing you your image more accurately (as they were shot), but that slide show is adding some processing. If so, the triuck would be to get the actual image to have that same sort of processing applied.
