Questions about Scanning Negatives

Greetings All

Both my flatbed scanner and my slide/film scanner are pretty quick and efficient. Both, however, automatically render the scan of the negative as a positive image.

Is there any reason why I might want to scan the negative as a negative?

What's your common practice?

Also, i notice BW negatives from the C41 process (BW400 CN film) has a reddish look whereas TriX is grey--should I make compensation scanning for that? The outcome is pretty normal looking for the C41 negatives, but I'm new to this and wondered what the consensus practice is.

Film is Fun! Here's a recent shot of my favorite horse, "General Beauregard Jackson" affectionately known as "The General" shot with BW400 CN:

Hello,

I just acquire a Plustek 7500i with Silverfast Ai and stated scanning some color negative and some C41 B&W. To make a story short, I purchased Vuescan as I could not get decent colors from SIlverfast - mainly due to their Negafix color correction.
I have found that so far the best result where by scanning the negative as a Raw DNG file with no color correction and only iSRD correction when needed. I scan at full optical resolution but set the output to 50%. I then process the DNG in ACR to adjust color casts.

Cheers.

Yes, the C31 B&W does tend to scan with a color cast. You can do a monochrome scan - though later toning of the image requires you to convert to a rgb in the editing program. Or simply allow the cast and desaturate in photoshop or equivalent.

Lately I've been messing with curves in the scan itself to get a tone I like, for my vintage camera negatives. Example:
