"Cropping" a rectangle into an oval (GIMP)

How to I manipulate a rectangle into an oval so when the image appears in a browser it appears only as an oval, not an oval laying on a rectangular background.

Merci.

you mean you want to add a transparency to the "white" edges?

That would probably work. I assume the "transparency"" would allow the background color to show through?

I did notice the gifs seemed to be too large to display so I had to play with the resize.

png is probably better. It can handle transparency better than gif and also more than 256 colors. Drawbacks: larger file size, and until very recently Microsoft couldn't get the transparency support right.
