It's amazing to me that photographers would be discussing justifications for copyright infringement. Excuses that Adobe knows about it so it's ok are rationalizations that shouldn't come into the decision. It's really very simple:
I am a photographer.
I don't want anyone to steal my photos.
Therefore, I don't steal other stuff that is copyrighted. I buy all my software.
There is a saying that starts with "do unto others...."

Well sort of...

Does buying a legit copy through Russia(?) count. If so my CS3 is all good.

I bought Photoshop 4 and Pagemaker 6.5 when I was back at Uni in the mid to late 90's. Since that PS no longer worked on Vista I had to look at other alternatives.

yeah I help myself to free luxuries if I've paid for the room, etc.

If Photoshop was $500 bucks maybe but $3,000 plus is excessive for the amount of use it would get.

Interesting...it seems that most folks who "paid for" photoshop did so with a discount, someone else's discount or were able to write it off as a business expense.

My entire life's earnings so far would just pay for a full copy of CS3, so it doesn't bother me, although admittedly my PS experience did get me a higher paid job...

I usually wait for a deal on software. Either the company or some seller has a reduced price. I found CS4 for $190 (full retail version) and my other 'artistic' software at 40-60% discounts when they made one time/day sale. It is a good idea to sign up for notification on the software sites you are interested in.

I have a pirated version of Photoshop CS4 and InDesign (for school). I did not recieve any financial aid this year and my one scholarship barely paid tuition. (FAFSA said I made too much money....wtf I work part time in a non-union grocery store, my paycheck rarely pays all of my monthly bills), Next year if I get financial aid I plan on using some of the money to buy the whole design package my school has to offer (at a student discount ofcourse). But right now the only choice I really had was to do this or drive to school on my days off to work on my projects (which would probably cost me more in gas then it would cost to buy the software).

Most of the time I try to use freeware such as Raw Therapee or GIMP.

EDIT: Is there a freeware software like Indesign that I could use?

I paid for the upgrade from CS3, which I also purchased legally. But I then became and idiot and purchased Lightroom as well, and even Bibble4 so it goes to show you how much I know!

Mike, your analogy is flawed, because in this particular case, the porsches are all lined up in a neat little row, they all have their doors open, and the keys are in the ignition. Not only that, but no one is going to do shit to you if you drive one off the lot.
Actually Gooshin, it is your moral fibre that is flawed.

It IS stealing. Plain and simple. The fact that you do not get caught or there are no visible consequences for YOU does not change that fact. Frank Clegg Director for Canadian Alliance Against Software Theft said it best, "stealing software is like stealing anything else. It is wrong!" citation to: Computing Canada

This just shows you for the incredibly immature person you really are. Please grace us with your opinions ONCE you grow up.
