Blurring background with Photoshop Elements 5

Title says it all. Want to isolate a subject and blur the background, as if I were shooting @ 2.8!

You can do it manually, although you won't get the bokeh you would with a lens...

1) Copy the background to a new layer on top of your image
2) Blur the new layer to your satisfaction
3) Add a layer mask to the blurred layer
4) Working on the mask, paint out your subject to let the sharp parts come through
5) Set opacity of the blurred layer if the effect is too strong

just a quick (and somewhat dirty) example of what AlienSkin Bokeh plugin does.

this was shot with P&S - everything was in focus, but what if I need to leave only eyes ?
