wait, so I can't use lightroom 3 beta on my other LR catalogs?
Go to the file menu and import from catalog. Select your Lightroom 2 catalog file and it will import all the photos into a new LR 3 catalog. This will prevent LR 3 from corrupting the LR 2 catalog.

But, as with any beta software I recommend backing up your LR 2 catalog first. Just in case.

If I use beta 3 for a while fine, can I import it back into LR2 (after backing up both catalogs, of course)?

Did you try this? I did and it did not work for me. I'm not sure that the import features have been enabled yet.

It's a good thing that you can't share your catalogs right now. They warn you not to use this for production work - in other words, not to use it for photos that really matter to you. And they mean it. During the beta of Lightroom 2, I ended up getting a nice thank you letter from Adobe because I discovered and helped them trackdown an extremely nasty bug that actually DELETED (permanently) an entire folder of image files. What you had to do to trigger the bug was very strange (or somebody would have found it before me) but it was for real. Anyway, that's always a possibility.
