as others have stated you need to navigate to the directoru holding the files. your best bet is to move them to the root.

start>mycomputer>Local Drive C:>

copy files (in their folder) there.

then start>run>cmd

then type: cd.. (that is cd PLUS two periods) you may need to do this twice. your goal is to have the screen say: C:\>

that is the root directory then you will type: cd imagedirectory

your screen should then look like c:\imagedirectory>

then type your ren command

C:\imagedirectory>ren *.thm *.raw

this should do the trick...

We have full size images! The XnView software did the job. Converted them to Canon raw - wasn't sure friend had Photoshop. Didn't expect XnView to also allow the files to be viewed. A plus since I don't have Canon raw converter software. They have been burnt to a second DVD data disc. Viewed the disc to make sure all was well.

Thanks to everyone for being so patient and kind with the info. Will still play with the other ways to do the renaming. Want to learn how it works. My friend also thanks everyone. She now has 690+ lost images back.

Thanks

Feel stupid. Still can't get it to work.
Open notepad, type the command in there, and then save it as "Somefile.bat" in the same directory as your images. Now double click on the batch file to run it.
