Edge Masking, or not

EDIT: perhaps I asked the wrong question; maybe the question is, whether or not edge masking per the Adobe recommended edge masking technique* is the preferred way to get the most detail out of shadows or should sharpening and shadows be done separately?

On the left, Edge Mask USM sharpening, on the right straight USM sharpening with the same settings without the edge mask.
