What functionality does this add? I have had no problems using Aperture 3 with the .DNG's my K-x makes.

Beyond supporting it, does that add any kind of additional functionality or metadata?

The only real difference between PEF and DNG is PEF uses lossless compression.

Well, now that it's supported that's a good enough reason for me to switch.

PEFs also save more extensive metadata (I can't remember the precise details of the top of my head), but nothing very significant for most users.

Does it mean the lens correction will work in RAW in aperture 3?

Isn't DNG compression also lossless? It is when using the DNG converter. Does Pentax not use the same compression?

K-7 support in Aperture means that the custom tone curve (labeled "boost" in the RAW fine tuning brick) is specific to the camera instead of general. I'm finding the processing to be a little better.

I am sad that focus points are still not showing up in Aperture 3. I was able to update metadata from master and find focus points for my K10 and K20, but it's still not there for the K-7. Makes me wonder if Pentax is not storing that info in that model.

only for Aperture 3?

Is this only supported in Aperture 3?
I have Aperture version 2.1.4 and I don't think it supports the k-x or k-7.

Apple Digital Camera Raw Compatibility is system wide. So Update 3.1 should update Aperture 2 as well as Aperture 3 and iPhoto 9.

AFAIK Pentax does not use compression in DNG files. The DNG specification has 2 compression values. Value 1 = Uncompressed. Value 7 = JPEG compression, either baseline DCT, or lossless.

Both PEF and DNG files are lossless, but PEFs are compressed so file sizes are smaller. DNG files aren't compressed. Both are lossless, though.

Yeah, and some of the newer lens models are also not decoded in the metadata, from what I can see.
