Interesting. Just recently played around with DNGs and discovered that the Win XP SP1 I have on my Photo computer did the DNG thumbnails without any modifications.

On my other machine I have SP2 and a copy of dpmagic - that takes care of thumbnail preview of every RAW format I need, including PEFs. I thought about buying a second copy of it for my other computer, but now I'm thinking about switching to DNG altogether. It saves spaces and maybe is a bit more "future proof"!

Just DNG.

If you want PEF files to be visible, you need to appeal to Microsoft to include Pentax formats in their RAW file viewer. Currently it only supports N* and C*.
For viewing the .PEF files thumbnails there is a small little program called... gee what was it's name again????
Oh yeah, DPMagic Community... It's free....

PEF thumbnails made easy for M$...

easiest way (IMO as a rookie in DSLR world ...) is:

visit this page: Restoring Nikon NEF Thumbnails Under Windows XP Service Pack 2 - Photo Tips @ Earthbound Light

and if too lazy to read then simply install this one:

dpMagic - miniLab Features

and select the community one- works great with K100D and K10D...

Best and hope that improves something (but not shooting :-( ), JR

  1. Open Notepad;
  2. Paste the following lines to editor window:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dng\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
    @="{3F30C968-480A-4C6C-862D-EFC0897BB84B}"

  3. Save file as "dng_thumbnails.reg";
  4. Double click on "dng_thumbnails.reg";
  5. Confirm that you want to add content to the Windows registry.

The File

BTW, here's the file that will do this for you. Just download, unzip, and run on your local PC. I had to zip it since the forum software (correctly) prevents us from uploading .reg files.

I don't think so. If you installed Photoshop, you already should be able to preview .psd files in thumbnail mode.
That's not too good for those who do not want to spend the money for Photoshop. Maybe we should put some sort of appeal together on a thread get all the users here to sign it and forward it to Microsoft and Pentax. Suggestion for Mo?

If you don't have photoshop, it's pretty unlikely that you will have .psd files. Unless I'm missing some special use case.

I read that adobe quit including code for viewing thumbnails of .PSD files in windows explorer after version 7 as, for some reason some of the files got corrupted.
any meantion of this with DNG files?

hope not

cheers
