3. Vivitar Kiron 70-150mm f/3.8 (M42) plus 2x Multiplier

A great alternative to DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 and it has about 1:3 to 1:4 close focusing capability

The 2x TC is better used on a faster prime

With Kiron 70-150mm f/3.8 zoom M42 in
K-x and Cosina 1:1 macro adapter serving like a +3 to +4 diopter

The Kiron zoom lens is amazingly sharp for a zoom. Its close focus is likely 1:3 to 1:4. It is a versatile lens and with a 2x doubler. The 2x TC is NOT recommended to be used with the zoom lens.

I used the 2x TC on a Soligor 200mm f/2.8 in M42 mount from Tokina, results are quite amazing

Soligor 200mm f/2.8 with Kiron 2 x TC

The lens look like a cheapo lens but it is going to be your best $50 investment. It is for me but I am moving to Nikon without a good support on M42 lenses and hence the selling. If I were shooting in Canon, I will keep my best loved M42 zoom lens.

Sale is pending to Australia member who asked about this lens first. Here is one thread in PF lens forum that I discussed about this lens

There is already a buyer who asks about this lens before you, sorry about that.

Thanks,

200mm is definitely not long enough for birds. A better lens to replace your 50-200 will be the DA 55-300mm. You should go with the DA and not the DA-L unless it is priced close to $200.

My Tamron 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 does amazing thing from 200 to 260. From 260 to 300, you need to be sturdy and hand-hold the shots properly. I used it to shoot many birds in flight scene before. It is not trivial but this zoom is sharp when used properly. It beats the DA 50-200 on its 1:2 close up, please check all links that I have provided for sample pictures. My hummingbird photo should stand out

Samples from Tamron 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD 1:2 Macro

shot it with K10D and Tamron 1.4x TC

On close up not found in DA 55-300 or DA 50-200

At 300mm and f/5.6 with K20D

At 300mm and f/8.0 with K10D

at 260mm on K-x

With shipping and default $100 insurance from USPS priority, the total is as follows:

lens: $75.00
shipping: $9.00 with tracking and default $100 insurance
-----
total: $84.00 --- you can't beat this price anywhere -- it is my do-it-all pride on zoom lens.

Thanks,
Hin

Hi mate. I see in one of your pictures of this lens that you also have the da 50-200. In your opinion, how do the two compare? I currently have the 50-200, but wish I could get closer when doing macro with my raynox 150. I'd love to hear your opinion, thanks in advance
Just want to forward the PM on the Tamron zoom

Both Czj Biotar 58mm f/2.0 and Vivitar/Kiron 70-150mm f/3.8 are sold.

And I have reserved the Tamron zoom for a nice Pentaxian who is a student.

Thanks,
Hin

That Biotar is in beautiful shape - congrats to the new owner! This is a big Nikon weakness - not being able to use such lenses.

Thank you for the comment and no one has yet shown any interest, I may need to end up keeping it. It is a nice copy in extraordinary good condition for its age.
