It doesn't have an "A" setting, so if you used Av mode on the camera you'd be limited to shooting wide open. You could stop down with the aperture ring in Av mode, but you'd have to dial in exposure comp for the proper exposure. Typically on lenses without the "A" setting, I believe you'd use "M" mode and the green button to meter.

Hi,

Are you able to explain to this noob about the need to have "trimmed the light-shield flange on the base in order to allow it to properly mount to a DSLR"? This lens having a P/K mount, wouldn't it have fit anyway?

Thanks.

Even though the mount if a P/K, many older lenses (specifically 3rd part lenses) had light-shields that were longer than newer lenses have. That was fine on older SLR bodies, but if you try and mount it on a newer DSLR you'll find it won't physically fit. Usually it will rub up against the power-zoom/SDM contacts located directly inside the mount. So in order to mount these lenses to a DSLR, you have to either remove the flange or modify it to accomodate the DSLR mount.

Here's a link I just found that shows what the flange looks like before.

Here's another link to the potential damage if you don't remove the extra material first.

This is a fantastic lens for a pentax. 28mm is the perfect "normal" focal length on a 1.5x crop sensor, f/2.0 is pretty much as fast as all of the FA limiteds go, and this lens rates a 9/10 in the reviews section, beat only by the best of the best $500-$XXXX lenses.

I would buy this lens in a heartbeat if I didn't already have one just like it!

Wow. Cheers for the info. I had no idea about this. It looks as though I just lucked out when buying older k mount lenses - none of which had the extra large flange.

You're welcome. It's actually only the second time I've come across a lens that I had to modify to make it fit. The first one was a Sigma MF 24/2.8, which at the time I didn't feel comfortable messing around with it, so I just removed the flange altogether and used it. This time I figured I'd give it a try and it worked out pretty well.
